On behalf of the Parish Council, I am writing to report a serious accident black spot at the entrance to GL7 3PU (what3words location: warned.trapdoor.tablets).
There have been three recorded incidents within the past four years in which vehicles have left the carriageway at this location. Vehicles travelling downhill frequently appear unaware of the sharp bend at the bottom of the hill. By the time the bend becomes apparent, it is often too late to reduce speed safely. This issue is exacerbated during periods when fallen leaves accumulate on the road surface, significantly reducing traction and increasing the likelihood of skidding. In each case, vehicles have collided with the wall at the base of the hill.
There is a substantial drop beyond this wall, presenting a very serious risk to life should a vehicle breach it. The Parish Council is increasingly concerned that, without intervention, a severe or fatal incident is likely.
We understand that this route has become part of Google’s recommended north–south diversion, avoiding Burford and Lechlade, and traffic volumes appear to have increased accordingly.
The Parish Council respectfully requests that the Highway Authority urgently assess this location and consider the installation of appropriate advance warning signage and reflective marker posts to improve visibility of the bend and mitigate the risk of further incidents.
