Failure to rectify regular and known flooding on A417 despite assurances that work would be carried out over the summer to unblock culverts and get the problems sorted

These photos were taken on 9 September after a small amount of rain fall. They show water running along the road rather than in the ditch to the left of the A417 when traveling towards Stamford in The Vale. The ditch has not been dug out, there are old sandbags left over from last winters flooding and the curbside has not been repaired. Over the dry summer nothing has been done to address the flooding that occurred here endlessly last winter. Why has nothing been done despite assurances that it would be sorted out “ when it dried out enough to de-silt the culverts”? Not surprisingly the heavy rain experienced on 23 September caused the A417 here to turn into a river and become impassable. There now also appears to be a field ditch draining directly onto the road carriageway opposite Mellors garage which has made matters even worse. This will happen every time there is rain until the problems are rectified.

I reported this in September but have received no updates from FixMyStreet or the council. There is a Ditch continually discharging water into the A417 and nothing has been done to stop it for over a year now. Our local councillor says the council are waiting for a landowner on the other side of the road to dig out their ditch before they do anything. This is a ridiculous excuse for doing nothing. They have had over a year to get the necessary consents in place to carry out the work themselves on the private land. It is an urgent safety issue now which requires an immediate remedy. The ditch flowing onto the road is not on that landowners land anyway. The culverts under the road need enlarging in any event. Then the water would flow under the road and flood on the landowners land rather than the road. There is also water continuously flowing over the end of Silver Lane in West Challow where it meets the A417 because the culvert under here is also blocked and not large enough. This has nothing to do with the ditch on the other side of the A417, it was reported months ago but still nothing has been done. Today this road and the A417 are death traps with rutted ice. Has the road even been gritted here? There will be a fatal accident here if the council don’t take responsibility for the state of the road and get on with remedying it. They will be sued when this happens because they are aware of the problems and danger and their failure to act is negligent. Please could someone from the council contact me directly by email to update me on when they are going to remedy this unacceptable situation. Thank you.
